Recruitment Realities in a Covid-19 World

Last week (1st July) John Thorpe was invited to speak on PMO Flashmob’s weekly virtual networking session PMO Working From Home. The theme of the week was recruitment, and Johns presentation: Recruitment Realities in a Covid-19 World focusses on looking back at the 2008 recession and lessons we can learn from it, assessing the current situation we are in now, as well as making some predictions for the future as we hopefully continue to come out of lockdown. You can view the 10-minute presentation below. John was also present throughout the [...]

IR35 in the private sector – Update

Whilst many contractors celebrated the decision postpone the implementation of IR35 Off-Payroll Working changes earlier in the year; the legislation is slowly creeping through the Houses of Parliament as part of the Finance Bill, ready for implementation in April 2021. The changes passed Committee Stage last week and will be heard at Report Stage within the next two weeks so the delay is looking to be exactly that, despite the ongoing criticism of lobbying organisations such as the IPSE, APSCo and Contractor UK. The progress of the bill also [...]

Learning Project Management Lessons from: The Last Dance

Netflix’s latest sports documentary: The Last Dance, is amassing millions of views and also stellar ratings from its wide-ranging audience. So, if you have an interest in sports, both individual and team, I would definitely recommend giving it a watch. I also believe that the series should resonate with project management professionals as the documentary delves into the mindset of Michael Jordan, to uncover how the mind of one of the greatest winners in sport works. And there are lessons to be learned. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work One of [...]

Getting Ahead of the Competition: Learning Lessons from 2008

The economic impact of Coronavirus in the UK (and around the world) has so far been huge, with some comparing the situation to the “Great Recession” of 2008. So recruitment is also feeling the impact and just like 2008 this situation has made the job market more competitive than ever for project management practitioners of every hue. Whilst many employed practitioners have not felt the full impact of the pandemic as they are either working from home on furlough, the Project Management domain has a large number of practitioners who operate [...]

Project Management Q&A: Will CAPM Help Fulfill the PMP Pre-Requisites?

I’m currently studying for my CAPM as I have nowhere near the hours needed for the PMP. Will the CAPM help get me into a position to gain the hours? We all know that certifications and training courses alone don’t get you the job, that’s the same whether it’s the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)®, Project Management Professional (PMP)® or anything else. It’s about the combination of experience, work-based skills, knowledge, education, work ethic, and interpersonal skills that gets you the job. The CAPM, in my mind, [...]

Project Management Q&A: Improving Your Public Speaking

I’ve been asked to do a 15 minute pitch to the senior management team as part of promotion opportunity. I’m not the world’s best public speaker any advice? There are two things that I learned from great speakers early in my career. The first was to really know your material. The second was practice. Did that get rid of the nerves? No, not at all but when you know your material inside and out; you’ve tried it out in front of the mirror and a friendly face; you’ve timed it; you’ve got the right kind of prompts just in case you need [...]

Digital Transformation – Top of the Exec’s Strategy Pile

We keep hearing those phrases, “it’s the new normal” and “this will change the way we work in the future” as we try to continue to work in “these unprecedented/uncertain/challenging times”. COVID-19 has certainly brought digital transformation to the top of the exec’s operational strategy pile as we try to get to get to grips with working virtually. For project practitioners we should be au fait with change yet no-one is immune from the elements of the change cycle – shock, denial, anger, resistance – when the consequences [...]

Running Projects from Home – The New Normal

For many of us, being flexible at work and working from home was an occasional luxury. But since the 23rd of March, for so many people, its become the new normal. Making this change is a process that may be difficult for those not used to prolonged periods of time away from the office. Over the course of the lockdown, I have been attending weekly Zoom meetings with PMO Flashmob WFH. The meetings usually have a theme not specific to the lockdown. However, the opening minutes allow participants to discuss experiences of working from home and the [...]
