Government Recognise Self Employed Workers in New Grant

Last night Rishi Sunak told the self-employed: “You have not been forgotten.” A week after wage subsidies of 80% for furloughed salaried employees were announced, the 5 million self-employed workers of the country were left wondering if they’d be getting the same treatment. So Who Applies for the New Grant? Mr Sunak revealed the following criteria for the latest grant: Self-employed people will be able to apply for a grant worth 80% of their average monthly profits over the last three years, up to £2,500 a month. At least half their [...]

Construction Sites Still Open! For Now

I’m sure at 8:30pm last night we were all tuned into the announcement made by Boris Johnson, announcing the new measures giving only four reasons to be able to leave your home. One of these reasons was so you can travel to and from work where “absolutely necessary”. However, the line between absolutely necessary and not absolutely necessary seems to be blurred. With some self-declaring themselves necessary and opening up shop this morning. Good news for our colleagues in the construction industry At the minute construction sites remains [...]

Project Managers – Stay Active in Isolation

There is no doubt about it, it’s been an unprecedented couple of weeks for the UK and globally with the outbreak and reaction to COVID-19. As project people, we’re hard-wired to try and bring order from chaos but even this is something that we’re struggling to manage – there’s just so much uncertainty. In this week, many project practitioners are adjusting to working from home – some for the first time, others that have only ever worked at home on a Friday. It’s not been long yet, just a few days, but if this is the new normal in [...]

Covid-19: Business as Usual at Arras People

Like most other organisations Arras People are adapting to the new world brought about by the reaction to coronavirus. Naturally the health of our fellow citizens is at the top of the list of concerns at this moment in time and nearer to home we are dealing with self-isolations for a variety of reasons, whilst some of the team (for the time being?) remain in the office. Fortunately, the Arras way has from day one back in 2002, embraced the call “do it from anywhere” so other than not having a full roster on the office, we are pretty much [...]

Well, well, well, surprise email of the year arrived at 21:04 pm on Tuesday 17th March 2020 from Mr Williams at HMRC. I’m sure like me, many of you were keeping an eye out for Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s first Budget presented last week, keen to learn what implications it would have for the PM domain going forward as well as coronavirus. Here are some of the main headlines: IR35 goes ahead as planned Despite the protests, letters to MP’s and generally negative views of IR35 the government has decided to go ahead with the changes due to happen on April 6th. Their statement read: “The Government believes it is right to address the fundamental unfairness [...]

Project Management Q&A: What’s the Best Way to Promote My Knowledge and Career Brand

What’s the best way to promote my knowledge and career brand without alienating my organization and team members? You’re wanting to share your knowledge and experiences with the wider project management community and part of that is about where you’ve gained that knowledge and experience. Sharing that should only be perceived as a good thing for the organisation you work for, after all, it’s also demonstrating to the wider community that this organisation is also doing good things worth talking about. If you’re taking on speaking [...]

Rebuilding Your Confidence After Project Failure

I’ve just left a six-month contract for a project which ended up in a failure for all sorts of reasons. It has really knocked my confidence. How can I start to get over this and get back out there? First thing, take a step back, and don’t think about jumping straight back into another role. You need to give yourself permission to take some time for reflection. What do we mean by reflection? I guess it could also be called your own ‘lessons learnt’ as we often refer to it in project management speak. It’s easy to fall down the [...]
